Addictive behaviors are very common in today’s world.  Often people only think of addictions as related to substance abuse (alcohol and other drugs).  However there are a host of other behaviors such as gambling, shopping, work, sex, internet use, etc., that are now called process addictions.  Stephen Covey has accurately described the addictive experience as:

  • creating predictable and reliable sensations
  • becoming a primary focus which absorbs attention
  • temporarily eradicating pain and other negative sensations
  • providing an artificial sense of self-worth, power, control, and security
  • exacerbating the problems and feelings it initially sought to remedy
  • worsening a person’s ability to function and creating loss of relationships

There is help for persons who are struggling with a substance and/or a process addiction.  Effective counseling can assist a person in overcoming the addictive experience and getting life “back on track”.  For further information feel free to contact one of the counselors at Catholic Family Service by calling any of our agencies located on the service locations map.
